Tell me about your role at Cambridge?

I am the Manager of Financial Reporting. I lead monthly and quarterly financial reporting including the preparation of monthly financial packages for parent company reporting, Chief Financial Officer financial statements and the preparation of consolidated and standalone audited financial statements. I also manage the month-end closing procedures to ensure timely and accurate reporting in accordance with applicable accounting standards and practices. I addition, I am accountable for managing regulatory financial reporting and monitoring compliance with regulatory requirements to support the Licencing team. Finally, I oversee internal branch level reporting and support our internal business units as well.

How long have you been at Cambridge?
I have been working with Cambridge for 2 years and overall have worked in the industry for 4 years.

What was your experience like prior to working in Finance?
Previously I worked in the private wealth holding and management industry. I also worked as the Manager of Accounting, reporting on the Investment and Real-Estate portfolio incorporated within the private holdings. Prior to that, I worked as a Senior Analyst of Internal Audit for a large Canadian corporation. From an educational perspective, I attended the University of Calgary and obtained my Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant designation from articling at Grant Thornton LLP.

How did you hear about Cambridge?
A recruiter reached out to me and presented this opportunity to me. The opportunity involved working within a rapidly growing company within the Fintech industry which operates internationally, which was extremely appealing to me.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?
The learning aspect of it, there’s always new tasks and new challenges to overcome in a day and new boundaries to understand the intricacy of my job.

What do you find most challenging about your job?
The biggest challenge I face is understanding the reporting requirements involved and ensuring our internal processes and resources are set in place to meet these demands.

What are 3 career lessons you have learned?

  1. Always be cognizant of the individuals/groups you are supporting in your role.
  2. Ensure you are operating within a region just outside of your comfort zone to ensure continued growth.
  3. Exhibit leadership qualities to influence those around you.

How do you define success?
Through the ability to make an immediate impact on an organization which is aligned with departmental and organization objectives. To make your time spent inside and outside of work count.

What does true leadership mean to you?
Having the ability to influence the people around you and become a symbol of strength. Providing an example that people strive to become by being approachable and exhibiting a tireless work ethic.

What advice would you share with someone looking to follow in your footsteps?
Continue to be inquisitive, keep asking questions. Don’t be afraid to learn and take chances. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Continue to challenge yourself!

What is one thing you have always wanted to try but haven’t? 
Snowboarding in Hokkaido Japan; I heard the slopes and snow conditions are amazing. Also, it would be great to enjoy their outdoor hot springs after a day at the slopes.

Do you have a favorite newspaper, blog, podcast?
My favourite newspaper is the Globe & Mail, as they always have interesting and informative articles on the financial markets and the Canadian economy. My favourite podcast is Bill Burr’s Monday Morning podcast. He adds a wildly hilarious comedic spin on hot topics.

Favorite travel spot or best vacation you’ve been on and why?
Cambodia, specifically the Angkor Wat ruins in Siem Reap.  Amazing culture and history are preserved within these ruins.
